A TIMELESS CRAFT
Coppa Camuna is the new carbon steel centerpiece designed by Giulio Iacchetti for Alessi’s brand “Il Tornitore Matto” and crafted in Valle Camonica using an archaic artisanal process.
A centerpiece produced through an ancient artisanal process, in a limited edition of 999 pieces. This is the Coppa Camuna, the new project by Giulio Iacchetti for Il Tornitore Matto, Alessi's brand dedicated to metal lathe work.
The result of the designer's collaboration with the artisans of Bienno, the "village of a thousand forges" in Valle Camonica where millenary ironworking knowledge is preserved, the cup was described by its creator as “an ancient process, a primordial form, a deliberately rough surface, for an object dedicated to engaging with human culture.”
To create it, Iacchetti was inspired by a helmet turned upside down towards the sky, thus giving the artifact a strong expressive charge. The author subverts the meaning of a war symbol, transforming it into a gentle artifact.
“It is an archetypal project par excellence, a shapeless form that does not deny all the efforts of the designers throughout history, but lives on its own.” Alberto Alessi commented.Handcrafted on the lathe, the cup is then passed through fire to become incandescent and absorb beeswax that protects it from rust, a traditional and ecological practice typical of the artisans of the Valley.
Il Tornitore Matto, a name inspired by the Mad Hatter from “Alice in Wonderland” to emphasize the reference to a world where rules are turned upside down, was founded in 2023 from an idea by Alberto Alessi in collaboration with Giulio Iacchetti.A new brand to create products that return to Alessi's productive roots, the lathe work of metal sheets, and where human creativity is particularly free from industrial constraints.
